Vet Exam Information: Appointment April 5th!
Pups went to the vet today! Our vet is EXTREMELY thorough, which we love. He makes a point to note everything about each pup after a thorough examination. We describe puppy vet exams in three different ways... perfect, normal, or abnormal.
A perfect exam is what it sounds like, it means that the vet didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, and so no notes are made on that pup's record sheet. It is unusual for every pup in a litter to get a perfect vet exam.
A normal exam is when a pup has something worth noting, but it is not expected to impact the health of the pup, or quality as a pet. It is not unusual for puppies to have imperfect exams at this age. They are growing at a rapid pace, and this sometimes results in awkward phases. In fact, sometimes we have more pups in a litter with "normal" exams than "perfect" exams! Normal exam findings generally correct themselves with age, or (in the case of an umbilical hernia) may need a very simple correction at the time of spay/neuter. Examples of imperfect, but normal puppy exams include a small under or overbite, a small umbilical hernia, "puppy laxity" of the patellas, an low grade heart murmur (which is expected to go away as the pup grows), or a missing a testicle (sometimes they don't both "drop" until a pup is older). We will ALWAYS notify you of any such things at the first vet visit, and you are NOT required to take a pup that you do not feel comfortable with due to any exam finding, even if it is a somewhat normal finding for a growing pup. We will only allow pups to go home if we feel comfortable that the issue is benign or will go away with age.
Abnormal exams are when pups have an exam that concerns us for their long term health. An example of this would be severe patellar luxation (extremely loose knee joints- very different than typical puppy laxity), a loud heart murmur (ex, 4 out of 6), cataracts, etc. In these situations, where the severity of the issue in question may impact their long term health, we "pull" the puppy from the reservation list and they are no longer available until we can either wait for the next exam of have the pup checked by a specialist, depending on the issue. We have been very blessed in that every single pup we have ever had to pull from a list due to an abnormal exam has ended up being just fine and the condition went away with age! Still- we don't let pups go to new homes until we are comfortable that they can live normal, happy lives.
Mr. Blue: Perfect vet exam!
Mr. Red: Perfect vet exam!

Puppyhood Heart Murmurs In Small Breed Dogs
Although the name is unsettling, heart murmurs (especially soft/low grade murmurs) are very, very common in small breed puppies, especially before 12 weeks of age. As the heart pumps blood through the heart chambers, valves, and arteries, it creates whooshing and swishing noises, which a vet can listen to with the help of a stethoscope. The diagnosis of a puppyhood murmur is nearly always a benign "flow murmur." A flow murmur occurs when the heart is completely healthy, but the shape of the heart chambers/valves/arteries is creating an unusual noise (in a similar way that footsteps or voices echo in a cave differently, depending on the size/shape of the cave). Keep in mind, with young puppies, the vet is listening to a heart the size of a lima bean that is in a period of rapid growth, changing significantly from week to week. The normal heart rate of a puppy is around 160 BPM, beats per minute. As the puppy grows, the heart becomes larger (and therefore easier to hear), and the growth rate of the pup levels off. The vast majority of puppyhood heart murmurs disappear completely by the time a pup is done with it's booster vaccines.
In all of our years of breeding, we have had many pups with a grade 1 or 2 heart murmurs at 5-8 weeks of age (one as severe as a grade 4... which also thankfully disappeared completely as the pup grew). In nearly every circumstance, the murmur disappeared completely with time. In the few that persisted to have a grade 1 murmur into adulthood, the murmur was cleared by a veterinary cardiologist via an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart) and diagnosed with an adult benign/flow murmur (as described above... it basically means that there IS an unusual sound, but the heart is perfectly healthy and the dog is not at risk).
If you are considering Ms. Pink, please reach out if you have any questions. Though a small/soft murmur doesn't intimidate us (because we realize how common it is) we understand that it can be frightening for a new puppy owner. We want you to be 100% confident moving forward with your pup, and encourage you to do additional research and consult with your vet. We are MORE than happy to move you to a future list if this is preferred.
Keep in mind, we clear each of our adult breeding dogs for heart conditions through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, and Pink will continue to be covered under our health guarantee, which includes cardiac disorders requiring surgery or lifelong medication.

All A's: This dominant puppy is extremely bright and interactive. Raising him will take concentration, consistency and time and an experienced owner is recommended. They can be extremely rewarding pets for someone who wants to have a highly trained companion or competition dog of some sort (Agility, dock diving, etc).
All N's: Easy going and contained, "All N" puppies will be pleasant and an ideal pet for most families. These middle-of-the-road pups are confident enough that they won't live for their owner's approval and guidance like a "P" puppy would (N pups can be stubborn at times) but they won't be as defiant as an "A" puppy can be.
All P's: This puppy has a weak self-esteem and needs your reassurance to feel safe. Without proper lessons and socialization, he'll be shy. With proper socializing, "P" pups can "built up" to make excellent family dogs and tend to be very attached to their owners.
Mix of A and N's: This active puppy will want to be in the middle of everything but will show more impulse control when stimulated than an all "A" puppy. "A/N" puppies are great for loud/active families that want a pup with lots of personality and confidence, but that are not nearly as intense as "all A" puppies.
Mix of N and P's: This self-assured puppy will be easygoing and gentle yet with a stronger sense of self than a completely passive puppy. Because he's more composed, he'll be an ideal puppy for a calm household.

4th Pupdate:
As those on the list know, this litter was a little behind with a couple of their milestones, so we waited a couple extra days to do the 4th pupdate. The 5th pupdate will be posted early/mid next week. The vet appointment for this group is scheduled for Easter Monday (April 5th). This week is a BIG one as puppies start the weaning process. As they start to toddle around more, they will be put in a larger playpen, how exciting! Weights are from their 4-wk birthday.
Mr. Blue: Similar to brother Green, Mr. Blue is a content little guy who has a nice, middle of the road temperament. He is playful but calms down for a nice nap on your lap after and makes good eye contact. While he isn't the most bold in the group, he does enjoy exploring! 2.60lb
Mr. Red: Though Red isn't a runt, and I don't expect he will be significantly smaller than anyone in this group, he is the "little dood" of the bunch. He is pretty easy going and independent, happy to do his own thing. He is food motivated and likes to be held and cuddles, he will kiss you back if you kiss him! 2.22lb
Mr. Green: Similar to brother Blue, Mr. Green is a content little guy who has a nice, middle of the road temperament. He is playful but calms down for a nice nap on your lap after and loves belly rubs. 2.45lb
Ms. Pink: This sweet pea is easy going and content to sit back and chill after a short period of play. She likes to hang out with and prefers calm pets to active play. 2.86lb
Ms. Yellow: Yellow is a feisty girl who is all about playtime, whether it is with her siblings or with a person. She is a happy go lucky pup with quite the wiggle butt... her tail is always wagging! 2.24lb
Ms. Purple: Despite Purple a bigger gal in the litter, Ms. Purple is on the passive side and prefers calm, gentle cuddles and interaction to active play (this very well may change in the coming week). She LOVES her mommy and is very motivated by any opportunity have a quick snack at the "milk bar"! 3.12lb
Ms. Orange: Orange's brain seems to always be "on"! She really enjoys to explore new things and makes good eye contact already. She has a very lean, feminine build. 2.92lb
Ms. Aqua: This sweet girl has a lovely, middle of the road temperament and is as sweet as can be. She likes to interact and play with her siblings or with people, and loves to wrestle with stuffed animals! 2.78lb
2.45lb

3rd Pupdate:
We have had some BEAUTIFUL weather, so Bailey's sweet babies ventured outside for the 1st time this week!!!
These pups are super chunky, so we are already switching over to the larger baby scale (which weighs in pounds). For size reference, a can of soup typically weighs about 1lb, so some of these pups weigh more than 2 cans of soup! We will be expanding their puppy pen this week, as we have started to have escapees getting out of the kiddie pool.
Mr. Blue: 2.00lb
Mr. Red: 1.58lb
Mr. Green: 1.96lb
Ms. Pink: 2.24lb
Ms. Yellow: 1.84lb
Ms. Purple: 2.32lb
Ms. Orange: 2.30lb
Ms. Aqua: 2.28lb

2nd Pupdate:
Hello All!
I greatly apologize for the missed video last week. I didn't even realize I missed it! We had the largest "batch" of litters EVER at Red Spring Farm in early 2021... to say I have been overwhelmed the last couple of weeks as our January babies joined their new homes is an understatement. I promise to make up for slow pupdates/lack of emails with extra videos/pictures these coming weeks. I just purchased a new cell phone... a big upgrade, specifically to take better pictures and videos that I can post throughout the week on social media (instagram/facebook) and improve the quality of weekly videos. Bailey's litter will be my "guinea pig/test group" for this, so like/follow and enjoy!
Bailey's beautiful babies are just beginning to open their eyes. They have finished up their ENS (early neurological stimulation) exercises. All pups are growing in leaps and bounds (weights below taken on Saturday). Bailey is a wonderful, attentive mommy.
Mr. Blue: 589g
Mr. Red: 490g
Mr. Green: 567g
Ms. Pink: 696g
Ms. Yellow: 574g
Ms. Purple: 735g
Ms. Orange: 654g
Ms. Aqua: 685g
