Vet Exam Information:
Pups go to the vet this week (17th). We will post at the bottom of this section once they get their exams. Our vet is EXTREMELY thorough, which we love. He makes a point to note everything about each pup after a thorough examination. We describe puppy vet exams in three different ways... perfect, normal, or abnormal.
A perfect exam is what it sounds like, it means that the vet didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, and so no notes are made on that pup's record sheet. It is unusual for every pup in a litter to get a perfect vet exam.
A normal exam is when a pup has something worth noting, but it is not expected to impact the health of the pup, or quality as a pet. It is not unusual for puppies to have imperfect exams at this age. They are growing at a rapid pace, and this sometimes results in awkward phases. In fact, sometimes we have more pups in a litter with "normal" exams than "perfect" exams! Normal exam findings generally correct themselves with age, or (in the case of an umbilical hernia) may need a very simple correction at the time of spay/neuter. Examples of imperfect, but normal puppy exams include a small under or overbite, a small umbilical hernia, "puppy laxity" of the patellas, or a low grade heart murmur (which is expected to go away as the pup grows). We will ALWAYS notify you of any such things at the first vet visit, and you are NOT required to take a pup that you do not feel comfortable with due to any exam finding, even if it is a somewhat normal finding for a growing pup. We will only allow pups to go home if we feel comfortable that the issue is benign or will go away with age.
Abnormal exams are when pups have an exam that concerns us for their long term health. An example of this would be severe patellar luxation (extremely loose knee joints- very different than typical puppy laxity), a loud heart murmur (ex, 4 out of 6), cataracts, etc. In these situations, where the severity of the issue in question may impact their long term health, we "pull" the puppy from the reservation list and they are no longer available until we can either wait for the next exam of have the pup checked by a specialist, depending on the issue. We have been very blessed in that every single pup we have ever had to pull from a list due to an abnormal exam has ended up being just fine and the condition went away with age! Still- we don't let pups go to new homes until we are comfortable that they can live normal, happy lives.

Puppyhood Heart Murmurs In Small Breed Dogs
I was fully expecting Ginger's litter to be full of murmurs (they are so small and we typically get a couple murmurs in a litter with tiny pups), but Ginger's pups were all clear and Lucy's had a couple murmurs... of course LOL!
Although the name is unsettling, heart murmurs (especially low grade murmurs) are very, very common in small breed puppies, especially before 12 weeks of age. As the heart pumps blood through the heart chambers, valves, and arteries, it creates whooshing and swishing noises, which a vet can listen to with the help of a stethoscope. The diagnosis of a puppyhood murmur is nearly always a benign "flow murmur." A flow murmur occurs when the heart is completely healthy, but the shape of the heart chambers/valves/arteries is creating an unusual noise (in a similar way that footsteps or voices echo in a cave differently, depending on the size/shape of the cave). Keep in mind, with young puppies, the vet is listening to a heart the size of a lima bean that is in a period of rapid growth, changing significantly from week to week. The normal heart rate of a puppy is around 160 BPM, beats per minute. As the puppy grows, the heart becomes larger (and therefore easier to hear), and the growth rate of the pup levels off. The vast majority of puppyhood heart murmurs disappear completely by the time a pup is done with it's booster vaccines.
In all of our years of breeding, we have had many pups with a grade 1 or 2 heart murmurs at 5-8 weeks of age (one as severe as a grade 4... which also thankfully disappeared completely as the pup grew). In nearly every circumstance, the murmur disappeared completely with time. In the few that persisted to have a grade 1 murmur into adulthood, the murmur was cleared by a veterinary cardiologist via an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart) and diagnosed with an adult benign/flow murmur (as described above... it basically means that there IS an unusual sound, but the heart is perfectly healthy and the dog is not at risk).
If you are considering Mr. Red or Mr. Blue, please reach out if you have any questions. Though a grade 1 murmur doesn't intimidate us (because we realize how common it is) we understand that it can be frightening for a new puppy owner. We want you to be 100% confident moving forward with your pup, and encourage you to do additional research and consult with your vet. We are MORE than happy to move you to a future list if this is preferred.
Keep in mind, we clear each of our adult breeding dogs for heart conditions through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, and Blue and Red will continue to be covered under our health guarantee, which includes cardiac disorders requiring surgery or lifelong medication.

All A's: This dominant puppy is extremely bright and interactive. Raising him will take concentration, consistency and time and an experienced owner is recommended. They can be extremely rewarding pets for someone who wants to have a highly trained companion or competition dog of some sort (Agility, dock diving, etc).
All N's: Easy going and contained, "All N" puppies will be pleasant and an ideal pet for most families. These middle-of-the-road pups are confident enough that they won't live for their owner's approval and guidance like a "P" puppy would (N pups can be stubborn at times) but they won't be as defiant as an "A" puppy can be.
All P's: This puppy has a weak self-esteem and needs your reassurance to feel safe. Without proper lessons and socialization, he'll be shy. With proper socializing, "P" pups can "built up" to make excellent family dogs and tend to be very attached to their owners.
Mix of A and N's: This active puppy will want to be in the middle of everything but will show more impulse control when stimulated than an all "A" puppy. "A/N" puppies are great for loud/active families that want a pup with lots of personality and confidence, but that are not nearly as intense as "all A" puppies.
Mix of N and P's: This self-assured puppy will be easygoing and gentle yet with a stronger sense of self than a completely passive puppy. Because he's more composed, he'll be an ideal puppy for a calm household.

4th Pupdate:
Lucy's tubby little babies are doing so, so well. We have quite a large weight range on these guys, and I strongly feel that their weights at this point are a good indicator for adult weight (larger pups now will likely be larger adult dogs). Pups all have open eyes and ears, and will be introduced to a potty grid very soon. Lucy is such a sweet, doting mom. Video will be posted Saturday evening.
Ms. Purple: 2lb 13oz: A little bit of a drama queen, this girl knows what she wants and is ready to go for it! Quite adventurous.
Ms. Yellow: 1lb 15.3oz: One of two pups less than 2lbs (just barely), this sweetie is submissive and sweet as can be.
Mr. Blue: 1lb 12.5oz: This guy is an alert, sweet, and cuddly little pup who wants nothing more than love and cuddle time.
Mr. Green: 2lb 7oz: Submissive and easy going, this happy guy is a cuddler, though occasionally gets a wild hair and decides to rough house with a brother.
Mr. Black: 2lb 0.8oz: Mr. Black just melts my heart, he is such an adorable balance of sweet kisses and gentle playfulness. He already seems to make eye contact with us.
Mr. Red: 2lb 11.8oz: Has such a lovely blocky head and big, expressive eyes. He is playful for a short while, and is then ready for down time and belly rubs.
Mr. Orange: 2lb 8.9oz: This sweet guy is all about some new adventures... but only with a sibling buddy for backup. He has a pleasant, middle of the road temperament.

This litter has the largest weight different among pups. It is hard to believe that some of these are siblings (Purple is HUGE compared to little Blue). Lucy is known for having litters with a wide range in adult weight. Each one of these pups is chunky as can be, thanks to Lucy's high milk supply and adoring attitude towards her babies.

Lucy's babies are doing very well, and are chunky as can be! Lucy is SUCH a great mommy and is very loving towards her brood. She still doesn't want to leave them, we have to force her go outside a couple times each day just long enough for us to weigh her pups and do their daily ENS (early neurological stimulation).

Lucy had 7 gorgeous pups early morning of 1/13. 2 girls and 5 boys! Just like her mother, Lucy is a fantastic mom and had an easy delivery. We do have 3 pups on "runt watch" where we weigh 2x a day and make sure they are nursing. Blue, Black, and Yellow... Blue is the smallest of the 3. Lucy tends to have a wide range of sizes, a previous litter (with Rocky) produced pups as large as 28lbs and as small as 15lbs. Lucy is a great mom who is VERY fussy about having her precious babies right with her. When we take one away to weigh and do early neurological stimulation exercises, Lucy will cry until you bring it back!
