I appreciate your patience with my getting these posted! It seems like I can't catch up lately and I ended up having to recruit help for videos- these wiggly butts are hard to videotape!
I am VERY happy that we waited to post below videos/information. Their personalities really established this week, both Pippa and Scout's litter get along very well despite the size differences and we have greatly enjoyed watching all the pups interact together.
Vet exams- everyone passed in both Pip and Scout's litters. All normal exams :)
Size- I expect Orange to be smaller than we anticipated in our original size estimation of 12-22lb. I do not think he will exceed 10lb (thinking more like 8lb). He is a very, very small pup. I anticipate that both Green and Yellow will fall in between our original weight estimate (around 15lb, +/- a couple #). Yellow will likely be just a hair smaller than Green.
Weights taken by my vet on 3/29
Ms. Yellow: 2.6lb
Mr. Green: 2.8lb
Mr. Orange: 1.5lb
Temperament Testing:
Using [A] for active response,
[N] for neutral and
[P] for passive based on:
1. Observation. Watching how she plays with other puppies, does she jump right into group activities [A], hanging in the midst of the activity [N], or submitting when approached [P].
Ms. Yellow: N
Mr. Green: N
Mr. Orange: N
2. Play. When you first take a puppy aside to play with, is he active/very playful [A], easy going [N] or does he just want to be petted [P].
Ms. Yellow: N
Mr. Green: N
Mr. Orange: N
3. Cradle. When cradling a puppy in your arms, does he relax [P], wiggle a bit and then relax [N] or wiggle and lick like crazy [A].
Ms. Yellow: N
Mr. Green: N
Mr. Orange: N
4. Call back. Using a treat or squeak toy and calling to the puppy while backing away, does he race after you while jumping at your ankles [A], follow happily with a trot and tail wag [N] or needs a moment to evaluate the situation before checking it out (praise helps) [P].
Ms. Yellow: N
Mr. Green: N
Mr. Orange: N
5. Tuck and pat. When kneeling/sitting on the floor, settle the puppy between your legs. Pet him in long gentle strokes as you praise him softly. Does he wriggle free confidently without giving up [A], wriggle and then relax [N] or simply melt in your embrace [P].
Ms. Yellow: N
Mr. Green: N
Mr. Orange: A
6. Bend over. Stand up, stretch and relax, Now go to your puppy and lean over to pet him. Your doing this may seem overwhelming to the pup because you're so large and he's so small. Does he jump up at your face playfully [A], crouch submissively with a passive tail wag [P] or just relax and let it happen, nonchalantly [N].
Ms. Yellow: P
Mr. Green: N
Mr. Orange: N
7. Nose kiss. Cradle your puppy's face in your hands and kiss him on the nose. Does he bite you back [A], accept the smooch calmly or return the interaction with a kiss [N] melts in your arms, just letting it happen [P].
Ms. Yellow: P
Mr. Green: P
Mr. Orange: N
8. Toe squeeze. In this exercise, you're testing your puppy's reaction and sensitivity to discomfort. While petting the puppy, gently squeeze the skin between his toes. Does he attack your hand [A], lick or mouth gently [N], or whimper/appear anxious [P].
Ms. Yellow: N
Mr. Green: N
Mr. Orange: N
9. Startle sound. Take a bunch of keys and when your prospective puppy least expects it, rattle them above his head and gauge his reaction. Does he playfully "attack" the keys [A], give them a nonchalant glance [N], or crouch submissively and looks to you guidance [P].
Ms. Yellow: P
Mr. Green: P
Mr. Orange: N
10. Crash test. Stand and wait until your puppy is no longer interested in you. Suddenly fall to the ground as if you've tripped and yell "Ouch." Does the puppy race over and playfully pounce [A], comes to sniff or lick your face [N], or hangs back to observe what is going on before approaching [P].
Ms. Yellow: N
Mr. Green: N
Mr. Orange: N
11. Uplift. Lift the puppy 4 inches off the floor by cradling his midsection. Hold him there for at few seconds. Does he wriggle and mouth [A]? Does he relax and look around [N]? Does he "freeze" and wait for your next move[P]?
Ms. Yellow: P
Mr. Green: N
Mr. Orange: N
All A's: This dominant puppy is extremely bright and interactive. Raising him will take concentration, consistency and time and an experienced owner is recommended. They can be extremely rewarding pets for someone who wants to have a highly trained companion or competition dog of some sort (Agility, dock diving, etc).
All N's: Easy going and contained, "All N" puppies will be pleasant and an ideal pet for most families. These middle-of-the-road pups are confident enough that they won't live for their owner's approval and guidance like a "P" puppy would (N pups can be stubborn at times) but they won't be as defiant as an "A" puppy can be.
All P's: This puppy has a weak self-esteem and needs your reassurance to feel safe. Without proper lessons and socialization, he'll be shy. With proper socializing, "P" pups can "built up" to make excellent family dogs and tend to be very attached to their owners.
Mix of A and N's: This active puppy will want to be in the middle of everything but will show more impulse control when stimulated than an all "A" puppy. "A/N" puppies are great for loud/active families that want a pup with lots of personality and confidence, but that are not nearly as intense as "all A" puppies.
Mix of N and P's: This self-assured puppy will be easygoing and gentle yet with a stronger sense of self than a completely passive puppy. Because he's more composed, he'll be an ideal puppy for a calm household.

Toddler Pupdate:
***It has been brought to our attention that our toddler pupdate didn't post properly! I am sorry we didn't catch this prior. The information below was written 3/16. I will be emailing everyone now to check in and make sure delayed puppy pick dates work***
Pippa's Precious Trio are officially "real puppies"! The are starting to really play with one another and their sweet little personalities are coming out. These 3 babies are all quite different. Mr. Green is the most outgoing of the three and is the first greet you at the door. He will try to play with us and get our attention by pawing at us. Mr. Orange is OH so cute, he is one of the tiniest pups we have had and he loves nothing more than quiet snuggles. He will fall asleep quickly if you are holding him close. Ms. Yellow is the sweetheart of the bunch, if you sit cross-legged on the floor she will quickly find her way right into your lap. She loves to give kisses. Pippa is doing great! These babies will be introduced to the potty grid and solid food this week.
This litter is a little behind the curb with their milestones. This isn't atypical whatsoever, every litter grows at their own rate, but it makes me anxious to have puppy selections on the 25th. I would like to post-pone puppy selections until 3/30 so that we can really see their personalities emerge before you choose your baby. This also allows me to delay first exam/vaccines a few days as well- which is my preference since some of these babies are quite tiny. Is this possible for everyone? Please reach out if this doesn't work for you!!!

Eyes Open Pupdate:
Pippa's Precious Trio are beginning to open their eyes and explore the world around them! All 3 are thriving, and so is their adopted sister, Scout's Ms. Aqua. Pip is a fabulous mommy. Pippa's Mr. Orange boy reminds me so much of his mommy (she was the little one within her litter too). Of course all the puppies join your family pre-spoiled, but I expect this little guy will hardly touch the ground before he leaves. Any time we get a visit from our puppy socializers, he is a crowd favorite and gets lots of extra attention. Ms. Yellow is cute as a button, we love the little cowlick on the top of her head. Mr. Green is the chunk of the bunch- he earned the nickname "sumo-puppy" at a week old, but he is already losing some of that baby chunk. We love his white footie socks!
Ms. Yellow: 718 grams, wavy
Mr. Green: 769 grams, wavy
Mr. Orange: 396 grams, wavy

Newborn Pupdate:
These 3 babies are doing great! We do have a large weight distribution between the 2 males in this litter, and I suspect this may be natural/genetic rather than environmental based on their features. This means that I suspect we may have one boy who will likely be at the high end of the anticipated weight range, and another boy who will be at the low end. This may be tricky for interested families. Mr. Orange reminds me a lot of Pippa as a puppy- he has very small features, while Mr. Green (aka Butterball) has a voracious appetite and is almost as large as Scout's puppies... he has a larger face and paws. Time will tell.
Those of you on the male puppy list, if you are only interested in one of these boys based on anticipated weight, please email me and let me know. If you are interested in the little female, let me know. I am considering offering her to a pet home rather than retaining a puppy from this litter (I need larger girls for my program- that is the only reason).
Ms. Yellow: 330 grams, wavy
Mr. Green: 443 grams, wavy
Mr. Orange: 180 grams, wavy

4th Puppy- Pippa had 4 puppies. The little guy below was teeny and began to decline shortly after birth. After several days of supportive care, he was not improving, and per our vet's recommendation, we opted to humanely euthanize to end his suffering. It is an unfortunately reality for a "runt" that fails to thrive to be born from time to time. We choose to share this with puppy families, as this is sometimes part of the journey when raising puppies and we try to be transparanet. It does NOT put other pups in the litter that are not needing supportive care at any increased risk.
*There aren't many peer reviewed studies on this, but here is a good, large study that found that 1 in 4 litters have a stillbirth or death of one or more puppies before 1 week of age. We are proud to have a MUCH lower rate, but it still happens form time to time.

Previous Pippa/Rudy Puppies
Previous Puppy- Meet Gabby:
Gabby is a past puppy of Pippa/Rudy's, born in January 2021. She weighs 18lb and is a future Red Spring Farm Mommy! That's right... Pippa may be a grandma later this year! She has a lovely wavy, non-shedding coat. She is playful, snuggly, and loves everyone she meets. She keeps her retired guardian momma busy (as any puppy would) but she can't imagine life without her. This haircut doesn't do Gabby justice- she has the same coat as Mango (below), just trimmed shorter. |
Previous Puppy- Meet Mango
(sent to us from her mommy) I just wanted to touch base with you and let you know that their seriously isn't anyone on this Earth that loves their dog more than I love this dog! She is the best. She is so loyal and follows me everywhere. She has her daddy's fur and I think she looks like an apricot Pippa. We get so many compliments on her looks and her temperament. |
Pippa/Rudy's 2nd Litter (lighting is different from 1st litter below but ultimately same colored puppies)
Pippa/Rudy's 1st litter (Gabby and Mango are from this litter- Gabby is the red/white pup and Mango was the smallest pink collar girl)
